WYD Centered On Sacraments
One of the most significant venues is Randwick Racecourse — the destination of the final vigil with the Holy Father on Saturday night and the Sunday morning official World Youth Day Mass.
Fundamentally it’s the liturgy that counts so construction workers have done their best to accommodate for that:Basically, there are four points, or four centrally located areas that the pilgrims can access that contain adoration structures, and actually there’s one quite large structure here behind us. They are the biggest things onsite except for the stage.
The reconciliation is also within those areas, it more of an under the sky or under the stars approach. It’s not actually in a structure but in a quardened off area which will hold approximately 10 priests giving confession in that area.
“This site and stage, like at every WYD venue, has undergone a series of inspections by construction experts, the Cardinal and the Vatican to ensure the best experience for the pilgrims.”
“The stage looks terrific. It’s been transformed in the space of a few days by Andrew Murphy and his team from ESS Construction. The roof is 40 meters by 30 meters, and the stage will hold nearly 1000 people:
500 bishops and Cardinals, 300-350 choir and orchestra.
The altar will be raised another 8 meters above where I’m standing and the roof of the stage another 17 meters high.
All in all it’s quite an achievement.”
