Fr. Dominic preaches on the need for all Catholics to pray for vocations for as the Lord says in today’s Gospel, The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few. Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth labourers into his harvest.

This hymn is taken in its parts from the Song of Songs of Solomon. The painting, which I really love, is Joseph teaching the child Jesus carpentry. It is called “Childhood of Christ” by Gerard van Honthorst. The Latin lyrics and rough English translation follow:
Flores apparuerunt in terra nostra, Tempus putationis advenit; Vox turturis audita est in terra nostra.
Surge, amica mea, speciosa mea, et veni: columba mea, in foraminibus petræ, in caverna maceriæ.
The flowers have appeared in our land, the time of pruning is come: the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.
Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come: my dove, in the clefts of the rock, in the hollow places of the wall.
Fr. Angelo preaches on the Gospel according to St. John where Jesus prays to His Father that His apostles would be protected and would maintain unity in charity and truth. He does this because He was about to leave them as far as a visible presence in concerned by being crucified for our sins. Then He was Resurrected and Ascended into heaven but promised that He would send the Holy Spirit who will give them the needed graces. So they prayed for the coming of the Comforter in the upper room for nine days completing the first novena of prayer.

Today we celebrate the Lord’s Supper where Our Lord institutes the Holy Mass and the priesthood, but also Judas, one of the first priests, betrays Jesus and thus creates the first scandal of a unfaithful priest. Let us pray for all our priests that they persevere in faithful service to God.
