Saint Joseph, Pray For Us

The month of March brings an important day for all men of God: the feast of Saint Joseph. Here was a man who accepted the immeasurable responsibility of raising the Son of God to become a man of character, faith, and courage. From their arduous journey across the Egyptian desert to their time working together in the carpentry shop, the lives of Joseph and Jesus would form a connection that we often overlook. It was no secret, the prophets foretold a difficult death for Jesus and Joseph certainly feared for his son’s future. Though unrelated by blood, the two would face similar trials and together theirs would soon became a story of humility, a story of submission, and a story of love. Though the experience rivals history’s most exciting events, Joseph has spent the last two thousand years as a silent hero whom many regard as only a quiet, unimposing symbol of paternity. Clearly though, there was far more to this man. God chose a man of prayer, a man of wisdom, patience, purity, devotion, and strength. Today Joseph is the patron saint of workers, men, and a happy death, and his life should resonate deeply within the heart of every man who ever called himself a man of God.
